Chapter 9

Was it wrong that Lydia’s heart jumped for joy when Foster had shown up that morning after she’d seen the strange Wolf in her driveway? She didn’t think so. In fact, she had never felt so certain about anything.

It was as if all her previous doubts had faded the second she felt his arms around her. The man had stopped her panic attack before it could become full blown, and she would be forever grateful for that. But that wasn’t why she was getting all hot and bothered over oven-fried chicken and warm string bean and potato salad.

Nope. It was the six-foot plus hunk of man wearing faded blue jeans and his ever present red hoodie who was currently playing with Barbies and Legos with Skylar on the princess themed area rug she’d bought when they’d first moved into the rental house. Admittedly, Lydia had never seen anything sexier.

Her girly parts nearly swooned when he’d plunked down and picked up a little plastic doll right next to Skylar. Her baby had readily handed him a tiny pink brush and instructed him on all the finer points of doll hair care.

Foster had listened attentively, turning his head to catch her staring only once. He’d given her a wink as if he knew she found it unbelievably sexy that a grown man was playing princess castle with her little girl. He probably did, she realized after he’d left her to her own devices while Skylar led him into her imaginary world of toys and games.

Was it her fault though really? Her body ached in ways she’d never felt, and her heart, that silly little muscle, was feeling all kinds of out of sorts. But seriously, what could be hotter than a man playing dolls so patiently with her little princess?

Sigh.

To her surprise, Foster had really meant it when he’d said he wasn’t leaving. While she’d answered a few of her clients’ emails and sent out some invoices, he’d called the Macconwood Pack Alpha as promised, and he’d made arrangements.

“Rafe is sending Seff, that’s his Beta, by with a few other of his Wolf Guard. They’re going to take a look around the area, catch the stranger’s scent to see if they recognize it,” he’d explained and pressed another one of his intoxicating kisses to her lips.

Damn the man could kiss. Being married hadn’t changed the fact that Lydia was no more experienced than she’d been as a twenty-year-old. Mac’s idea of intimacy was harsh and cruel. At the very least, it left plenty to be desired.

Before him, she’d been too busy working and going to school to worry about boys. Shy and young, so green it hurt to think about it. Then later, she’d been so busy running from Mac and taking care of Skylar she hadn’t had the opportunity to consider her own wants and needs.

Not that she would trade her daughter for anything, but maybe it was okay to want something for herself now. Maybe it was time.

Her cheeks burned as she thought of things she hadn’t considered in, well, ever really.
